Unit 15 : Festivals

Language Focus: Reading

Chinese New Year also known as Lunar New Year is the most important holiday for the Chinese. It spans from the first day of the first month of the lunar calendar and ends on the 15th day; however, informal celebrations often start weeks before and ends weeks after. Vietnamese, Koreans, Taiwanese and other populations with which the Chinese have had extensive interaction or where there are large Chinese populations also celebrate the new year. Visits to friends and family are common. Elders give small red envelopes containing lucky money to children. New clothing is worn to signify a new year. The colour red is considered festive and lucky and is worn and displayed throughout the new year celebrations.
